Abstract In addition to the security and privacy challenges in vehicular ad hoc network (VANET), the computational and communicational costs are huge challenges, since they increase the network latency, thus casing to reduce the network's communication efficiency, providing to the attacker with an opportunity to penetrate the network. In this paper, we propose a new scheme to eliminate the mentioned challenges in VANET systems. In the first part of this scheme, we initialize and register the On-Board Units (OBUs) and Road Side Units (RSUs). In the second part, an exchange between the RSU and OBU of mutual authentication and group key generation via Chinese remainder theorem (CRT) as well as using the bloom filter (BF) in broadcasting and verifying beacons. Whereas in the third part, there are two major stages, the first stage occurred when the vehicle leaves the group, and the other stage if the trusted vehicle starts to broadcast bogus information. The proposed scheme overcomes state-of-the-art schemes in security, privacy, and communication and computational costs. Moreover, it provides a convenient low overhead for low latency. © 2019 IEEE.
