Abstract Road quality degradation could lead to various impacts on road users, such as reduced safety during the trip, increased risk of accidents, increased potential for congestion, or increased maintenance costs. Road maintenance and monitoring by manual inspection are costly, time-consuming, complex, and prone to bias. A system capable of identifying road anomalies, such as cracks, potholes, and speedbumps, is needed. Smartphones nowadays were equipped with a variety of powerful yet low-cost sensors. It enables collecting road anomalies data in a cheap, more productive, and efficient way. This paper aims to review the development of a vibration-based system to identify road anomalies. It also tries to explain the factors that can influence the vibration-based data collection using a smartphone. This review will include features used to improve road anomalies identification results, various machine learning algorithms, and their performance in road anomalies identification. © 2020 IEEE.
