Abstract The emerging wireless communication technologies, smart city conception and computing capabilities in the devices are enlarging the connected world and improving human life comfort level. There are many initiatives aimed at analyzing the conception process, deployment methods and the outcomes of smart city which are being developed in multiple fields. Smart cities network applications such as smart transportation drive wireless usage levels ever higher, as consequence there is a rise of challenge in wireless network spectral efficiency, better quality of service and increasing network capacity with limited availability of radio frequency. To deal with this issue, this paper analyses the latest antenna technologies of cooperative multiple input multiple output (MIMO) which is the bridging technologies to fifth generation (5G) by first studying the benefits of cooperative MIMO in smart city applications such as smart transport, home automation and security by assessing the impact of cooperative MIMO technologies to achieve higher spectral efficiency.
