Abstract The deployment of smart street lighting infrastructure offers cities the benefit of reducing their operating costs, while continuing to offer the citizens the required lighting services and safety. Energy efficient lighting retrofit projects with traffic-adaptive control strategies are some of the attractive projects for cities to consider. This paper proposes a simulation-based simple methodology for assessing the financial viability of smart lighting retrofit projects in smart cities. The methodology is presented and applied on a case study street in South Africa to indicate that the proposed project would result in a payback period of 3.86 years. Sensitivity analysis indicates that project’s payback period is mostly sensitive to unit cost price of the newly retrofitted luminaires and electricity price. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
