Abstract Urbanization is an inevitable trend, but there are also many negative impacts on the population's life that harm the sustainable development of the city itself. That is, the environment is not protected, the planning is unsightly, the community is limited, and the urban technical infrastructure system is overloaded. Therefore, the orientation of smart city development becomes more urgent than ever. Through studying the experience of building smart cities in Singapore, Korea, the US, Japan, China, Europe, and other successful developed countries, as well as studying the real issues of urban development in Vietnam. The study used the SWOT matrix to evaluate the feasibility of the smart city orientation in Vietnam and propose strategies to promote the application of the smart city model in accordance with the situation of Vietnam on the recommendations on policy setting, technology promotion, implementation organization, and capital mobilization methods. © 2024 Scrivener Publishing LLC.
